Captains make their rigs and prepare through the winter months for this day in anticipation of Flounder season. The 2019 Flounder season started last Friday 5/24 not with a bang yet with the sound of Mother Nature whistling in your ears. The wind was tootin pretty hard, not very fish-able at all. The wind was clocked at 20 plus MPH out of the Northwest. The Bay had white caps in all directions. Needless to say Captains did not attempt to leave the dock. The very few I know that did leave the dock returned in short time empty handed. Word was you just got blown all over the Bay not having much chance to catch the flat fish we all love to catch.

I heard in some areas of NJ the Flounder fishers did very well, other areas did not fare as well. In our Ocean City NJ/Somers Point NJ location there was a lot of fishing going on yet not a lot being caught or kept. We know of a Captain or two who had some good luck and bent the rod with Flounder and kept a fish or two. I would say the over all picture of things was not too exciting. The tide was not a helping factor with low tide being in the morning and the high tide later morning early afternoon. When I am fishing at the beginning of the Flounder season when the water is a bit cooler I like fishing just as the tide starts going down off of the high tide, morning hours I think is best. Those first few hours of the outgoing tide in the morning with the warmer water going out of the Bay seems to be the time I have done best.

I have found early in the season when there is a high tide in the later morning or early afternoon the boat traffic on a weekend is ridiculous. People are running all over the place too fast making a lot of noise in the water. Trolling along to a spot is fine and it does not shake up things. The Flounder do not get skiddish. With so much boat traffic when someone in another boat sees your boat catch a fish or two it’s like a magnet. Other boats come from all directions and stop close enough to be in your back pocket. This makes things very difficult to impossible to fish successfully. During the week early in the season it is not bad. Once we get a couple weeks into the Fluke season things tend to flatten out. The tide is not as critical as long as the tide is moving. Fishing the weekdays is best, weekends are still a challenge yet with a nice moving tide early in the morning on a weekend it works. Stay Tuned! Things have just got started.
