The weather has started to break with the air temperatures at night in the upper 30’s low 40’s and day time temperatures lately in the upper 40’s and some days upper 50’s. With the weather being cold and nasty to this point I have not got any work done on the boat. Now maybe I can start getting FISH TALE ready. It’s looking like I won’t get the boat in the water until the later part of April. With that said we may not start fishing in the Bay for Spring Striped Bass/Bluefish until maybe the very end of April or early part of May. Right now for this area the water is still too cold to get the resident Striped Bass moving and active to bite. The Bay water temperature a week ago was 38*, As of this morning it was at 43*. For the resident Bass in the area to bite this spring the water temperature needs to get to about 50*. The Spring Bass bite will be done by Memorial Day Weekend. Then in the fall the resident Bass will start the bite with water temperatures in the low 60’s and the Bass will bite until the water temperature in the fall get to about 45* or so. If anyone is interested in Spring Striped Bass in May give me a call. I have a couple dates available. Sometimes there are nice Bluefish in the Bay for the Spring. It can be hit or miss.

I did read an article in The Fishermen Magazine written by Jim Hutchinson Jr. In the article he was saying that it looked like New Jersey is going to be status quo for this season. Meaning that we will have the same regulations from last year again for this year. If that’s the case our season would start Memorial Day Weekend and run into September probably around the weekend of the 21st. I am good with this type of opening and closing dates. Where I have a problem is with the 18″ minimum size for the Flounder. Where is the relief we were told was coming?? Why are we keeping the bigger fish?? Most of these bigger Flounder are females. There are not large numbers of these big fish in the area. Don’t get me wrong, there are Flounder in the Ocean City NJ area just not as many as there used to be. The large Flounder are moving much farther to the north. The reality is Flounder of all sizes are moving north. The water temperature here is becoming too warm for all species of fish. Fish are looking for cooler waters. Hell there are reports that the Striped Bass have moved into the St Lawrence river between Canada and the US. The Bass have never been this far north and in this river before.
The catch reports from places north like New York, Massachusetts are incredible. They are catching more Flounder and Big Flounder now a days, many more than they used to. I don’t like or understand the thinking on the minimum size for Flounder. The bag limit per person per day would still be 3. I am OK with that.

Supposedly the powers to be are looking at ways to possibly give us the relief we were promised. Let’s hope there is going to be some sense made and lower the minimum size. I would really like to see a “SLOT FISH” system for Flounder put in to place. Stay Tuned! We shall see.
