As I had mentioned to you all last report, I was going to try to get off the dock last weekend to do a recon mission for Striped Bass in the Back Bay. My window of opportunity last weekend was small. Last Sunday the wind blew 15 to 20 gust to 25mph which is not close to being fish-able, so Sunday was not even a consideration. The window I had was Saturday morning. The wind was to be around 10mph early and pick up to 10 to 15 gust to 20 in the mid morning hours which would shut me down. The wind was to continue to increase from there. High tide was at 8:30am at the 9th Street Bridge and high back where I planned to fish was about 15 minutes later. I got off the dock at 6:30am and was fishing before 7. The wind was fish-able at that point yet I could feel it starting to freshen up by 7:30.

Before I left the dock I was thinking this may be a bit to soon in the fall to fish for Striped Bass yet I heard of a few being caught in the Back Bay waters hence the recon mission. I started casting my 1/4oz artificial bait to a point that stuck out from the marsh before 7am. On my second cast I got hit. The fish hit yet missed the bait so I kept the bait moving slow and the fish came back and this time I got him on the hook. The Striped Bass was not legal size yet gave a nice fight back to the boat. VERY COOL, first Bass of the Fall season. After that Bass I was psyched and thought the action could be good. It was good yet not with Bass. The renegade Bluefish moved in and took over. It seemed as though very other cast I caught a Bluefish. They were not small Blues yet not big chomper size Blues either. The Blues were about 20″ and probably weighed in at about 3 lbs or so. By then it was about 8am and the fishing was very difficult because the freshening wind was now blowing 12 or more miles an hour. My drift was very fast. I passed any spots I was trying to work in a flash. I could not get more than 1 cast at the spot. Casting in this wind was a pain. If casting into the wind I could not get any distance on my cast to get the bait to the strike zone. If casting across the wind it was difficult to keep my line tight to feel a bite and not have a big bend in my line. By 8:30am the wind was now blowing 15mph with higher gusts.

I was only able to fish about 1 1/2 hours before the wind shut the door on my recon mission. To do this trip the wind conditions need to be almost perfect. The least amount of wind possible. With wind up to 10 or 11mph is fish-able less is great. When MR. WIND gets to blowing 12mph or more it is not fish-able. So on my recon mission I did hook 1 Striped Bass which I released and a bunch of renegade Bluefish which I really was not interested in yet were fun fight. when I got back to the dock because I did not fish the entire 4 hours I had planned on I decided to scrub the boat. She is clean as a whistle now.
